About Me

Hi! My name is Karen Alberto and I am currently a freshman at the University of Maryland, College Park. I am from Annapolis, Maryland where I attended The Key School. I am currently enrolled in Lyra Hilliard's ENGL101 blended learning course. I am planning on graduating this institution with a degree in business marketing and management.

I created the website Problem-Based Learning in order to present the ongoing conversation about teaching methods in higher education to my classmates and the greater public. I can personally relate to this issue as I am now a student in college who is impacted by the difference in class size in comparison to my past educational history. It is becoming a challenge for instructors to engage students in larger classes. There are many different perspectives on how instructors should address the problem at hand.

Originally, I began my research by looking at the effects of class size on student outcomes. Through my research, I learned that there was no direct relationship between class sizes and student success. With that said, I began to investigate how different teaching methods and other class factors affect student learning. Now, I believe that preventing student failure and supporting an encouraging learning environment depends on student engagement in active class discussion; therefore, problem-based teaching method should be implemented in colleges and universities.
